The Beach Life Starts Here!
The Beach Life Starts Here!
For over 27 years, I've had the privilege of coaching athletes and facilitating athlete development through lessons that extend far beyond sports. In addition to raising a family, I've observed how people grow through different seasons of life.
Throughout these years, I’ve noticed certain patterns in growth. It takes time. Confidence is built through consistency, and responsibility develops through ownership. Some of the most significant progress occurs long before it becomes visible to others.
These lessons manifested on volleyball courts, in classrooms, at home, and eventually in my garden.
What started as an interest in growing plants evolved into a sanctuary for slowing down, observing, learning, experimenting, and reflecting. The garden has offered many of the same valuable gardening lessons I’ve witnessed throughout my coaching journey and in life.
Coach Gardens is the culmination of those experiences. It serves as a platform to share gardening projects, observations, successes, failures, and the insights that arise from nurturing and helping something grow.
For years, much of my life revolved around volleyball courts where I focused on athlete development. These spaces were essential for honing skills, facing challenges, building relationships, and learning to navigate success and failure. Every practice and every match offered valuable lessons in growth.
In contrast, the garden presents a different kind of environment. Here, there are no scoreboards, standings, or championships. The pace is slower, and feedback is quieter. Yet, like volleyball coaching, it rewards attention, preparation, adaptability, and care.
A garden cannot be rushed; seasons arrive on their own schedule, and conditions change regularly. Plans require adjustment as progress demands our participation.
In many ways, the garden has transformed into another type of court—a place where I can apply gardening lessons to learn, experiment, solve problems, and continue growing.
Coach Gardens serves as part garden journal, part experiment station, and part notebook, where the principles of athlete development can also be found in the lessons learned from nurturing a garden.
Here you'll discover practical gardening projects, container gardening ideas, seasonal updates, harvest reports, and insightful observations. Some posts will emphasize growing food, building systems, and solving problems. Others will delve into the gardening lessons that arise through the rewarding process of caring for living things, closely paralleling the experiences of volleyball coaching.
Many of these reflections will be shared through Coach's Notes.
Coach's Notes is a compilation of observations, stories, successes, failures, and lessons gathered from the garden, often echoing themes relevant to both sports and gardening. Sometimes the focus will be on peppers, herbs, or cucumbers. Other times, discussions may revolve around stewardship, patience, family, leadership, or the unexpected connections between gardening and everyday life.
Whether you're seeking practical growing ideas or thoughtful reflections from the garden that resonate with the principles of athlete development, I hope you'll find valuable insights along the way.
Coach Gardens is a place to share projects, experiments, harvests, observations, and lessons from the garden, which can also tie into athlete development. Some posts will focus on growing food and building practical systems related to the principles of gardening lessons. Others will explore stewardship, patience, family, and the insights that emerge through the process of caring for living things, much like in volleyball coaching. Many of those stories and reflections can be found in Coach's Notes.
