Surface Beach Volleyball Club
For more than 27 years, I've had the privilege of coaching athletes, teaching lessons that extend far beyond sports, raising a family, and observing how people grow through different seasons of life.
Throughout those years, I noticed certain patterns. Growth takes time. Confidence is built through consistency. Responsibility develops through ownership. And some of the most important progress happens long before anyone else can see it.
Those lessons appeared on volleyball courts, in classrooms, at home, and eventually in the garden.
What began as an interest in growing plants became something more—a place to slow down, observe, learn, experiment, and reflect. The garden offered many of the same lessons I had seen for years through coaching and life.
Coach Gardens is where those experiences come together. It is a place to share gardening projects, observations, successes, failures, and the lessons that emerge from caring for something and helping it grow.
For years, much of my life revolved around volleyball courts.
They were places where athletes developed skills, faced challenges, built relationships, and learned to navigate success and failure. Every practice and every match provided opportunities to learn.
The garden offers a different kind of environment.
There are no scoreboards, standings, or championships. The pace is slower. The feedback is quieter. Yet it still rewards attention, preparation, adaptability, and care.
A garden cannot be rushed. Seasons arrive on their own schedule. Conditions change. Plans need adjustment. Progress requires participation.
In many ways, the garden has become another kind of court—a place to learn, experiment, solve problems, and continue growing.
Coach Gardens is part garden journal, part experiment station, and part notebook.
Here you'll find practical gardening projects, container gardening ideas, seasonal updates, harvest reports, and observations from the garden. Some posts will focus on growing food, building systems, and solving problems. Others will explore the lessons that emerge through the process of caring for living things.
Many of those reflections will be shared through Coach's Notes.
Coach's Notes is a collection of observations, stories, successes, failures, and lessons gathered from the garden. Sometimes the topic will be peppers, herbs, or cucumbers. Other times it may be stewardship, patience, family, leadership, or the unexpected connections between gardening and everyday life.
Whether you're looking for practical growing ideas or thoughtful reflections from the garden, I hope you'll find something useful along the way.
